The power in your hands

What do the NYSE and GPS have in Common?

What does the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Global Positioning System (GPS) have in common? At first glance, maybe nothing, but a closer look reveals that both are critical systems that are dependent on IT systems and therefore both are susceptible to computer glitches and cyber attack.

On May 6th, at approximately 2:30pm Eastern, the NYSE crashed over 1000 points and to this day no one seems to know exactly why. Was it actually a data entry error by a single individual (A “fat finger”)? A massive computer glitch? Or possibly a Cyber Attack?

We’ll look into it and see if we can find some answers – and what can be done to prevent such potentially catastrophic events in the future. Whether your an active investor, have your 401k tied up in the market, or simply rely on your Navigation system to get from A to B, this is one episode that you won’t want to miss. Join us.

We’ll be joined by Dr. James Angel, a Professor at the McDonough School of Business at Georgetown University and a world-recognized expert in the operations of stock markets. He’s also one of my professors during my MBA program at Georgetown. More on his bio below.
