Technology Today…

The power in your hands

Go Safely to the Cloud

This week is all Cloud. I am attending the McAfee FOCUS 11 conference in Las Vegas where I am speaking on securing the Government Cloud. On air this week, I’ll share with you what I shared with the audience in Vegas – an approach to assessing the cloud provider’s operations and security practices so that management can make an informed, risk-based decision as to whether or not to use the services of that particular provider.

Our approach is simple – we gain an understanding of the cloud provider’s operations in critical areas (access control, data backups, security monitoring, incident response, etc.) and compare them to our own. We compare them based on the risk those operations bring to – or reduce from – the organization.

We’ll discuss the details on air, but our approach increases an organization’s understanding of how their data is managed both internally and in the Cloud. With this knowledge, management can make a far more informed and sound business decision with respect to Going to the Cloud vs keeping the data and applications internally.
